Hey, y'all! The salon won't be closed forever. The updates from the state, county, and health authorities are anything but consistent, but things are looking up for a reopening. I honestly don't feel that a beauty parlour, with all our prolonged close contact, should be included in Phase 1, but I am getting creative thinking of ways to make myself comfortable and all y'all safe and healthy.

There are many new rules, protocols, and equipment requirements that must be met in order to reopen. I am working hard on tracking down these hard-to-find PPEs etc, but I'm not the only one.
The "Salon Experience" is going to be greatly changed with these rules in place, and I am currently putting together a list of these protocols for the website. Things are gonna feel very Clinical for the foreseeable future. Sigh.

The salon will not be opening before July, but as I keep an eye on the News and the Numbers, I will most likely start the scheduling process next week. Thanks for all your financial help, check-ins, and patience. Do get in touch with any questions. I am looking forward to seeing you all IRL asap. ❤

I know we are all eager for the news that life is Normal again. Not just yet, darlings. The governor has included salons in her list of businesses allowed to reopen (with many precautions) beginning this Friday.

Many of you are wondering what that means for the shop/your hair. Okay, well, the state is going to be reopening (through an application process/meeting predetermined criteria) county-by-county, beginning with counties that have seen zero cases of Covid 19. Multnomah will be waaaaaay down that list, if not at the bottom. Even if we were allowed to reopen this week, I would not feel remotely comfortable with that plan. I am not an essential worker, not even close. (Although I've seen some of the things y'all have done to yourselves at home, and they make me feel important and needed. )

I wish I had concrete information to pass on to you, or that I could at least start pre-booking your appointments, but the details are still inadequate. Don't worry your pretty little hearts. You will be hearing from me the moment certainty arrives. Stay well, loves. I miss you terribly.

Your pre-payments have kept a roof over my head, kibble in Rory's dish, and a space for hair and art when we get out of this thing.

My SBA loan came through this morning, and I'm sure you can imagine what a relief that is for this girl who hasn't been able to work for 52 days (it feels even longer!).

I love you people with all my heart and guts, and I am well aware of how extraordinary my community is, no matter what the universe throws at us. This business is technically a place where humans come to have me work with their Outsides, but it has grown far deeper than that through the years into my extended family.

All my baby fine babies here? When we put up our tiny hair we just want it to look bigger, right? Here are some styles that will make it easier!
Rule #1 for putting fine hair up: PRODUCT. Go ahead and turn your head upside down and spray some dry shampoo all up in there. Yes, even if your hair is clean. *Especially* if your hair is clean! Brush that through. Then spray a lightweight, workable hairspray throughout. *Now* we're talkin'.
Most of these styles are anchored by elastics. When those of us with fine hair put it in a pony tail, our hair is plastered to our skull, and the tail is teeny. Same with our braids. I included a photo of how to "pancake" a braid, which is essentially pulling it *gently* apart to swell it. I do a very similar thing with the flat hair "before" the elastic. I'll either pinch perpendicular (to the elastic) sections and pull them gently away from the scalp, or I will use the end of a rat tail comb to tuck under strands and lift up.

I am going to be practicing these techniques for all times, as my one goal is to have The Big Hair. Some days it works out, others, not so much.
Think of this as PLAY.

I am hearing you. The draw is great. I understand, when we are scared or down we look for things we can CONTROL. For a lot of people right now, that means breaking out the scissors and the grocery store color.
Is it possible to get good results from box color? Yeah. I would say like a 30% chance. The problem is the box color's reaction to/with the color *I* put on your hair. That is unpredictable. And the biggest reason box color is risky is that *undoing* it can be damaging, time-consuming and costly.
We are all in the same boat right now. We have the same roots. AND, WHO IS SEEING US?!?
I vote for Scarf Creativity. Hats for House Arrest. I love y'all, and will be understanding no matter what you choose to do.

Hey, y'all! I thought I would take this moment (and this perfect image from @punk_history ) to address the germy elephant in the room.

The salon is open. That said, this career does not offer Social Distancing, and my defective lungs don't offer much in the way of immunity. If you are wobbly or sniffly or warm, (or anyone around you is ill) I will be THRILLED to reschedule you. Appointments canceled last-minute due to sickness will never be charged the cancelation fee!

As we consider how best to keep our beloved neighborhood businesses afloat during this nebulous period, please remember Chou Chou as well.
